Cherishme Handmade keepsakes

I love the thought of buying items from WAHMs (work at home mums). The idea is great, and as long as the item quality is compatible to elsewhere then why not? A fabulous friend of mine runs her own venture Cherishme Handmade keepsakes which takes your baby’s first clothes, blankets etc and turns them into different things. There’s a huge selection of animals to chose from but there’s also cushions too. Items can be personalised with the addition of names and dates of birth and they are very reasonably priced too!

It’s a great idea. After all what else can you do with your baby’s old clothes other than store them away to get out in a few years to gush over? This way they can be on display 24/7!!

I chose two items since I had a ridiculous amount of baby clothes which I loved (but know I’ll never use again!) so I opted for a lion and a large sized cushion.

These were the finished products…

Don’t you agree that these are fantastic? The photos don’t do them justice either, they are amazing quality! With such a fantastic eye for detail, I can see her business reaching amazing heights. Why not have a look yourself?

Our first proper mummy/daughter lunch date!

Today I was shopping for an outfit for an upcoming meal and Cara was clearly very bored by it all so I took her to Debenhams cafe for lunch. I had heard down the grapevine that they had a promotion where kids eat free until Easter so I thought I’d look and see what they had and if it would be suitable.

Firstly I was really surprised at the menu selection for kids. There was hot and cold options. Full meals and snacks. We decided on a sandwich meal deal for Cara, which consisted of a full size sandwich a packet of crisps, choice of a yogurt or fruit, choice of either fresh apple of fresh orange juice and a kitkat. I was really impressed with the options, not only tasty but also healthy too! I decided on a panini as I fancied something quite filling, having skipped breakfast (oops!). Sure enough, when I went to pay I only paid for my own food, Cara’s food was totally free!

The service I received throughout was brilliant and staff were going out of their way to help. Since I had Cara in the pram I only had one hand free to carry food so they happily took my order and brought the food to me, even though that wasn’t the “normal” way they serve it. Normally you get a buzzer and when it goes off you go back up and get the order. They asked me if there was anything else they could do to help and didn’t rush me when I stood in the wrong area for food (oops again!).

We sat and happily ate our lunch and Cara loved it, she especially loved the attention she was getting from every cafe-goer over the age of 60!

I can’t recommend Debenhams cafe enough. In a time where customer service seems to be overshadowed by a priority for profits and income, Debenhams are leading the way in reminding us what makes our country so great!

The mum tag!!

The lovely Alyssa at mumtoamonster has tagged me in the mum tag project so here’s my answers. I hope you enjoy reading and feel free to request a tag!

1. Are you a Stay at Home Mum, or a Working Mum?

I am a working mum, I am heading back to work on Monday next week (sob!!) after a whole year off. I work in a contact centre for the government (much less exciting than it sounds!) and will now be working 4 days a week. This was always planned but I’m very lucky in that my childcare costs are much less than projected so I probably could afford to work less but we’ll see how it goes!

2. Would you have it any other way?

Yes! I would love to have a family run bakery/pie shop with my mum. Maybe one day…

3. Do you co-sleep?

Not very often, Cara has always slept in her own bed at night, I would worry that she would wriggle down or roll over and get stuck. I am a bit of a worrier!! She sometimes comes into bed with me after her first bottle and we have a little snooze before getting up and ready for the day. This is something that I will miss when I return to work!

4. What is your one must-have item for your baby?

Now this is a difficult one. I have to say that there has been some must-have items since she’s been born but they stop being useful as she grows. So I have to say that my must have is a camera to capture those special moments. From the very beginning and those first cuddles to watching them grow every day, learning new things and exploring. I have so many photos of Cara now, she is a very beautiful girl!!

5. How many kids do you plan on having?

Just the one. When I was younger I wanted two but when I met my partner he wasn’t planning on having any so we compromised on one. After having PND too, I don’t know how I would cope with another one, I’m happy with just Cara. She’s enough to handle as it is!

6. Date night? How many nights per month?

Not very often! My mum like to babysit but since returning to work she hasn’t had as much free time available so we get a night to ourselves about once a month where we like to order in food, slob about in our comfy clothes and watch movies.

7. Your child’s favourite show?

Cara hasn’t shown any interest in the tv except for when Phillip Schofield is on! She loves it when he’s on the tv and squeals at the screen but other than that she just ignores it. I have friends with babies of a similar age and their babies will happily watch the baby programs but Cara is too excitable and would rather run riot!

8. Name one thing you bought before you had your baby and never ended up using?

Nothing really! We were quite sensible when we bought baby products and we were very lucky to receive a lot of gifts so we didn’t buy anything that was never used.

9. Your child’s favourite food?

Grapes, strawberries and tomatoes! She also loves baby crisps but I try to limit her intake of them since she can’t get enough!

10. How many cars does your family have?

Just one, I’m the only driver in our house so no need for another. We have a Citroen C1 which is a very small car but it’s everything we need and is extremely economical to run. We considered buying a bigger car a few months ago but there’s really no point for us. Maybe when Cara is a bit older and longer in the legs!

11. Weight gain before pregnancy, during and after and now?

I have never been thin. Ever. I have no idea what I’d look like if I was thin either. I was overweight before I was pregnant but managed to maintain the same weight throughout my pregnancy through eating sensibly. I am still the same weight (roughly) now, and I need to do something about it!!

12. Dream holiday with your kids?

I don’t really know to be honest, there’s not one place in particular really. I’d like a sun holiday, maybe to Mallorca. I’d like a holiday closer to home in Center Parks. I’ve been to two of their parks and have loved every minute there so would love to take our little family. My favourite holiday was to San Francisco and Yosemite when I was a child, I would love Cara to experience there too.

13. Dream holiday without your kids?

Nowhere too far, maybe a nice weekend break at a spa somewhere. Or even better a whole family holiday somewhere hot and Cara can come along and have babysitters (her granny) when the other half and I went out.

14. How has your life changed since your baby has been born?

Surprisingly less than I imagined. We were never party animals before so having a baby fitted in really well with us as we’d much rather have a movie night than a party any day!

15. Finish the sentence: ‘It makes my heart melt to see …

My gorgeous girl’s smile!!!

16. Where do you shop for your kids?

Normally her clothes are from Tesco, Asda, Matalan, Primark, M&S, Debenhams and Next. At the moment we don’t see the point in spending lots on her clothes, the rate she grows at means she’s never been in them long. I also buy a lot in the sales too, I love a bargain!

17. Favourite makeup and skin care products?

Makeup is a new thing for me. I used to only wear it to go on nights out or special occasions but I am finding I need it more now. I hate the slapped on look and prefer a much more natural approach so my favourites at the moment are Olay BB cream, Maybeline mascara and Vaseline on the lips.

18. Huggies or Pampers?

Neither for me. I tried pretty much all brands before deciding Aldi’s Mamia range are the best, and cheapest too!

19. Have you always wanted kids?

Yes! When I was asked when I was young what I wanted to be when I grew up, the answer was “a mum”.

20. Best part about being a mum?

Everything. My girl is my life. She gets on my nerves sometimes but she gives me a cheeky smile and a cuddle and I’m in heaven. Motherhood is nothing like I pictured but it’s sooooooo much better. I wouldn’t change it for the world xxx

Weight issues…

So you put on weight when you have a baby. Well most people do. I weighed the same the day before I gave birth to Cara as I did the day I found out I was pregnant. It wasn’t deliberate, I just consciously ate better as I was eating for two and didn’t want to fill her up with rubbish. When she was born I was smaller than before and while I was breast feeding I stayed smaller too. However when I stop breast feeding her, I continued to eat the same amount and slowly but surely the weight piled on. The time has come where I need to do something about it.

I’ve been making better food choices and moving more. I’ve massively cut back on rubbish and although I am finding it hard sometimes, I have some of the most amazing friends who are very supportive. I couldn’t do this without them if I’m honest!

I refuse to let my other half know how much I weigh so am not going to put it out there to the general public either BUT I am losing it and will continue to let you know of my progress.

Much love x

On the move…

20131129-141753.jpg

So the time has arrived when Cara has learned how to get from A to B. And fast!! She’s been crawling for a couple of weeks now and quickly picking up standing too. It’s funny, you spend ages trying to teach baby to move and as soon as they learn you want them to go back to being immobile! The most recent thing is pulling up on furniture, which is a bit of an issue in our house as we have quite low furniture, with quite sharp edges. However we have decided not to baby proof too much, we have drawer and cupboard clips for the kitchen but I’m sure she’ll learn to be careful!
